Abstract: The problem of diffusion controlled reactions between point defects is treated considering the discreteness of diffusion due to lattice structure and realistic lang range interaction potentials between mobile defects and sinks. It turns out that the reactions are adequately described by continuum diffusion representing the sinks by phenomenological spherical interaction volumes. The radii of these volumes are determined by the microscopic structure of the sinks as well as by the interaction potential. Due to the interaction the radii are temperature dependent, e.g. for strong attractive potentials V($\underline{R}$) or low temperature the effective interaction radius R$_{a}$ is approximately given by -V(R$_{a}$) = kT i.e. by the distance from the sink at which the potential energy gained due to the interaction equals the thermal energy.
